MRC’S AIDS REPORT OUT TODAY

THE Medical Research Council is expected to release its report on the impact of HIV/Aids on adult deaths in South Africa on Tuesday. MRC representative Merle May said last week that the release of the document — entitled ”The Impact HIV/Aids has on Mortality in South Africa” — was delayed because the council needed more time to discuss it with the country’s policy-makers. The report made headlines last week after Stats SA said it had difficulties with some of its findings. The Mail & Guardian newspaper reported that the research indicated that 40% of adult deaths were caused by HIV/Aids. The MRC did not immediately respond to the criticism, saying it would release the findings of the document on Tuesday after the Cabinet gave it the go-ahead. – Sapa
