THE murder trial arising out of the Bisho shootings nine years ago resumes on Wednesday in the Special Investigative Unit tribunal courts in Sanlam Park, East London. This follows a brief in the Bisho Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to hear the court’s findings from Monday’s inspection of the site. Former Ciskei Defence Force officer Vakele Mkosana and former soldier Mzamile Gonya are facing charges of murder and attempted murder arising out of the shootings at Bisho on September 7, 1992. Thirty people were killed when Ciskei troops opened fire on African National Congress demonstrators. Due to the availability of evidence, Mkosana and Gonya are facing murder charges in connection with only one of the deaths. Mkosana also faces charges of culpable homicide in connection with the deaths of the other demonstrators. The inspection focused on recording the various points at the site in and around the Bisho Stadium, which were shown to the court on Monday by former policeman Evan Jones and ballistics expert Kobus du Plessis. The case was postponed to enable the defence teams to consult with Du Plessis. – Sapa
