Leading members of our Jewish community have crossed swords over Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and its inhumane treatment of its inhabitants.
Allow me to congratulate comrade Ronnie Kasrils for speaking out against it. It gives me hope. Allow me also to salute the Jewish Board of Deputies for engaging Kasrils in the international debate on Israel’s real role in the perpetuation of the suffering and oppression of the Palestinian people. I disagree with the board’s support of Israel but I can understand the reasons for that. However, I believe that it is this kind of misplaced solidarity that leads people to stifle debate, and by so doing expose the totalitarian nature of their cause. Sheikh MF Gamieldien, Kenwyn
