Missing money remains a mystery

Barry Streek

The South African Police Service confirmed this week that it is investigating alleged irregularities in the Thabo Mbeki Crossroads Education Fund as well as the theft of R30 000 from the African National Congress’s Western Cape provincial caucus.

Police gave no further details about the probe into the education fund.

The fund’s chairperson, Mnyame Booi, said he was completely mystified.

The investigation into the fund was disclosed in Parliament by Minister of Safety and Security Steve Tshwete replying to a question by the New National Party’s Johan Durand.

Booi responded: “I spoke to the minister afterwards and he said there is nothing.” The fund’s auditors, Deloitte and Touche, had carried out a special investigation and a second auditing firm had also looked into the matter. No irregularities had been revealed, he said.

The theft of R30 000 from the ANC’s Western Cape provincial was confirmed by party spokesperson Cameron Dugmore. He said a female caucus employee had been dismissed, but police said no one had yet been arrested.
