THE second strike to hit South African ports in two weeks ended on Thursday morning when Portnet management and unions signed an agreement. Two unions — the SA Logistics Services and Transport and Allied Workers’ Union, and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union –downed tools on Monday in a dispute over performance bonuses. Last week, the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union struck over bounses and grading. A source at Durban harbour said that as a result of the strikes, ”roughly ten or more” vessels were backed up in the roadstead, which could take more than two weeks to clear. Cape Town harbour authorities reported no backlog of ships in the roadstead. – Sapa
