A R10-million fraud involving some Eastern Cape public works department officials and contractors has been exposed, the department said on Monday. Roads and public works MEC Phumulo Masualle said four department officials, some companies and professional services providers to the department had allegedly been running a fraud network. Four different companies had their contracts with the department terminated after the discovery of the alleged fraud. Masualle said the suspects had accumulated large amounts of money fraudulently. His department was still assessing the full extent of the loss. The Scorpions and a team from the office of the Auditor-General were investigating those involved in the scam. Masualle said each official involved would be served with corruption and fraud charges before the end of the week. One of the officials involved had his car instalments paid by a company as a kickback, he said. – Sapa
