Between 80 and 120 Chadians ‘massacred’ in Bangui

The Chadian government alleged that between 80 and 120 Chadians were ”massacred” on Thursday evening by presidential guards in the Central African Republic (CAR) capital of Bangui, where CAR government forces have quashed a rebellion.

”Between 80 and 120 Chadians were massacred on Thursday at around 5pm” by members of the presidential security guard led by former rebel Abdoulaye Miskine, now a colonel in the CAR army, said Communications Minister Moctar Wawa Dahab.

The rebellion, launched last Friday by supporters of renegade army chief Francois Bozize, was quashed on Wednesday in a government offensive in the capital.

The CAR government has accused neighbouring Chad of being involved in the rebellion, an allegation Ndjamena denies. Relations between the two central African countries have been tense since Bozize fled to Chad late last year, after being sacked from his key army post and accused by the CAR government of plotting to oust CAR President Ange Felix Patasse. – Sapa-AFP
