Bright outlook for new SA newspaper

A daily newspaper aimed at an emerging market, The Daily Sun, will be launched in July by Nasnews, the newspaper division of Media 24.

This was announced on Wednesday by Khulu Sibiya, a former editor-in-chief of City Press who will edit the paper during its launch phase.

The Daily Sun aims to follow the successful entry last year of the Sunday Sun, a Media24 weekly that pushed through the 100 000 sales mark shortly after its launch, said general manager Fergus Sampson, previously executive director of the Botswana Guardian.

He said The Daily Sun would be run from Media24’s Johannesburg offices and would improve media access for many people. Publisher Deon du Plessis, a former managing director of Independent Newspapers, said the new publication would not compete with any current newspaper players.

”We want to develop a new market and provide affordable media access to people who are not regular readers at the moment.” He said the paper would target that part of the market that came into being after 1994. This market was young, economically active and quite different from any sector of the so-called black market of the past, du Plessis said. – Sapa
