A 5-month-old baby is in a critical condition in hospital after being raped in Hillbrow on Saturday night while she was left unattended in her parents’ flat, Johannesburg police reported.
Captain Mashadi Selepe said the father told police the child was left in the care of the 28-year-old mother around 9pm.
”According to the father (40) he left the flat to fix a customer’s computer. On his way back home he found his child’s mother fighting on a street corner in Hillbrow.
”The man stated that he took her (his partner) to the house, and upon arrival they argued because the mother left her child without any supervision and the door was unlocked.”
Police were alerted after the parents saw blood while changing the child’s nappy. The child was examined by a district surgeon who confirmed the rape. The baby immediately underwent surgery.
”The child’s parents were taken in for questioning, but no arrest has yet been made and investigations are continuing,” Selepe said.
Johannesburg police area commissioner Oswald Reddy condemned the rape, saying ”police will not rest until the perpetrator is brought to book”. – Sapa
