Gautrain may affect property prices

Although the release of the recommended routes for the ”Gautrain” was well received, uncertainty still existed on how the train would impact upon the residential property market.

Eskel Jawitz Real Estate representative Herschel Jawitz said that until there was clarity as to the routes, Sandton residents and potential property buyers would continue to be concerned.

The train will link Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Johannesburg International Airport.

A report assessing the impact the railway line would have on vegetation, fauna, geology and soils, as well as the surface, groundwater, air quality and environmental resource economics was released on Monday.

Jawitz said the environmental concerns and the willingness to take into account the impact on property prices were welcomed as was the decision to take the train underground through the major residential areas.

”Convenience when the train is completed is definitely a selling point for property owners provided there is no noise and vibration effect. In most cases, access to public transport is seen as a strong plus,” Jawitz said. – Sapa
