After spending the weekend in jail, Gaye Derby-Lewis was granted R3 000 bail in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The 62-year-old woman, whose husband Clive is serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani, was arrested on Friday.
She was one of 11 people arrested during Operation Hopper, a countrywide police swoop on farms and other residences to find those responsible for a spate of bomb blasts linked to right-wing extremists.
Derby-Lewis is accused of the illegal possession of a firearm. Police also wanted to question her because they believed she might be able to assist them in their investigation into the blasts, representative Selby Bokaba told reporters.
The bail conditions include that Derby-Lewis may not leave the Pretoria district without informing the investigating officer. She may not enter or come near an international boarding gate or departure point.
Derby-Lewis, with short black hair and dressed in a kaftan with blue flowers, stood seemingly unperturbed in the dock, her arms folded in front of her.
The case was postponed until January 29 next year for further investigation. – Sapa
