Five petrol attendants were found shot dead in Grassy Park on the Cape Flats on Monday.
Their bodies were found at a Shell service station on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Victoria Road in the early hours, said police representative Captain Jacques Wiese.
All five had been shot in the head.
Wiese said an off duty detective from Nyanga made the gruesome discovery when he and his wife stopped at the service station around 1.00am to make a few purchases.
The detective found two workers lying in the attendants’ room slumped over a table. Both had been shot in the head, execution-style.
The detective called for backup and when police arrived on the scene they found the bodies of three other attendants locked in a toilet. They too had been shot in the head.
The cash register which is believed to have contained about R1 000 was empty.
Wiese said police were still on the scene at the all night garage and the area was roped off.
Traffic in the immediate vicinity of the service station, which is not expected to be open for business on Monday, was reduced to a snail’s pace as curious onlookers stopped at the scene.
Community Safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane was due to visit the scene soon. Wiese said the motive for the killings appeared to be robbery.
Western Cape police have posted a ”substantial” reward for information leading to the conviction of the killers.
Wiese called on anyone with information to contact the violence crime investigations unit on (021) 9359600 or the crime stop number 08600-10111. – Sapa
