Winnie has a broken foot: trial postponed until 2003

The fraud and theft trial of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and broker Addy Moolman was postponed on Monday in the Pretoria Regional Court because she had a broken foot.

The trial is to resume on February 24 and run to March 7. The court heard on Monday that Madikizela-Mandela broke her right foot.

The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) president and ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela, has pleaded not guilty with Moolman to 60 charges of fraud and 26 of theft involving an amount of R942 360.

The State alleges that letters with the ANCWL letterhead and Madikizela-Mandela’s signature were used to fraudulently obtain loans from Saambou Bank in the names of bogus league employees, including Madikizela-Mandela’s daughter Zinzi and former personal banker, Dikeledi Seakamela.

The theft charges relate to amounts of R360 which were deducted from loan applicants’ bank accounts for a funeral policy that allegedly did not exist.

The trial started in July. – Sapa
