Three miners die in Carletonville

Three Anglogold miners died in an earth tremor at the company’s Savuka mine near Carletonville on Tuesday night, the company said on Wednesday.

Anglogold representative Shelagh Blackman said the seismic event, measuring 3,1 on the Richter scale, occurred about 3 500 metres below the surface.

The bodies of two of the victims had been recovered and the third had been located. Rescue teams were still trying to recover the third body on Wednesday afternoon.

Blackman said four other mine employees were injured. Two of them were admitted to Western Deep Levels Hospital where their condition was said to be stable.

The Department of Minerals and Energy had been notified and an investigation was underway. – Sapa
