IRAQ, SUDAN AIM TO SET UP FREE TRADE ZONE

IRAQ and Sudan aim to set up a free trade zone, Iraqi Trade Minister Mohammed Mahdi Saleh said Monday at the start of a visit by Sudanese Foreign Trade Minister Abdel Hamid Mussa. “The creation of a free trade zone between Iraq and Sudan and the means to expand commercial cooperation between the two brotherly countries will be on the agenda of our discussions,” he said, quoted on Iraqi television. Mussa said the current level of two-way trade with Sudan was “limited,” without giving figures. Iraq, which has been under embargo since 1990 but is allowed to import basic goods under UN supervision, has sealed free trade accords with six Arab countries: Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. – AFP
