Semen found in Marike de Klerk’s Cape flat

Cape Town | Thursday

POLICE on Thursday confirmed that semen had been found in the flat of murdered former first lady Marike de Klerk.

Police representative Superintendent Wicus Holtzhausen said the results of DNA tests on the semen were not yet available.

Holtzhausen denounced as ”absolute nonsense” a report on the e-tv program 3rd Degree on Wednesday night that semen had been found on De Klerk’s clothing and body.

He was not prepared to speculate whose semen was found in the flat.

Holtzhausen said police investigations continued, but so far the only suspect in the case was the accused, security guard Luyanda Mboniswa.

De Klerk was found murdered in her luxury Dolphin Beach flat in Table View, Cape Town last month. She had been stabbed in the back and strangled.

A firm of city auctioneers said there has been tremendous interest in her flat from prospective buyers.

The flat, with views across Table Bay to Robben Island and Table Mountain, was expected to fetch between R2- and R2,5-million when it went under the hammer on February 23, Samantha James, of Michael James auctioneers, said on Thursday.

She said other flats in the beachfront block had already been sold for prices approaching that amount, and the De Klerk flat was ”definitely one of the nicer flats there”.

”We’ve had huge interest from Johannesburg, Durban, Namibia, and even the United Kingdom,” she said.

She did not believe buyers would be put off by the flat’s history. Security at the complex had been stepped up and it was monitored by closed circuit television.

Her company had sold many properties where killings had taken place, and this had not proved a deterrent to buyers.

”I think if anything, it being her flat might make it worth more because of the prestige attached,” she said.

There would be no reserve price on the flat. – Sapa
