Airbus wins SAA tender

FIENIE GROBLER, Johannesburg | Thursday

AIRCRAFT manufacturer Airbus won the bid to supply South African Airways with its long haul fleet, the company announced on Thursday.

Public Enterprises Minister Jeff Radebe told reporters at the SAA press conference in Johannesburg that he was satisfied that the adjudication process was fair and transparent.

”The airline industry is extremely fortunate to be served by two giants… both with superb standards.

”We had to decide which of the aircraft fit our conditions and requirements best.”

In September last year SAA invited aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing to compete in the bid for the airline fleet.

SAA president and chief executive Andre Viljoen said the total value of the fleet renewal programme was at a list price of $3,5-billion.

He said SAA had negotiated a substantial discount but was unable to disclose the figure, saying it would breach a confidentiality agreement with Airbus.

The fleet renewal will enable SAA to meet noise requirements at overseas airports and fly more cost effective, low maintenance and fuel efficient aircraft to ensure long term profitability.

”The new fleet will give us flexibility to deploy it on most of our network and routes. It also gives SAA 10% more seat capacity.

”In Airbus, SAA has chosen a good and efficient partner to help turn around the airline to profitability and restore its competitiveness,” Viljoen said. – Sapa
