ANC and Aids: I can see clearly now

ZINGISILE MAPAZI, Johannesburg | Tuesday

THE African National Congress will on Wednesday announce its plans on dealing with HIV/Aids. ANC secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe told journalists in Johannesburg that the party had, during its three-day NEC meeting at the weekend, adopted a comprehensive statement on its approach to the pandemic.

While not divulging the aspects of the statement to be made public at the Wednesday media briefing, he said the announcement would be ”broad and much more clearer” on the whole issue, including the often used terms such as ”roll-out” associated with the government’s HIV/Aids programme.

The decision, Motlanthe said, had been preceded by an overview on the development of government policies and programmes since 1994 to combat the epidemic.

The statement would be communicated to the structures of the ruling party and the South African public, he said.

Meanwhile, ANC representative Smuts Ngonyama said the party would this week report on the progress in the party’s co-operation alliance with the New National Party.

Dashing any hopes of NNP leaders getting cabinet posts as yet, Motlanthe said co-operation with the Nats went beyond issues of governance and was aimed at building a truly non-racial society and dismantling the apartheid legacy on all fronts with a party that had been its architect.

”The issue of Cabinet posts lies with the President, but co-operation is not only for the purpose of governance” he said.

Ngonyama said the announcement would be made at a media conference some time this week. – Sapa
