Doctor Khumalo shot at Soweto wedding

Soweto | Monday

FORMER Bafana Bafana midfield maestro and Kaizer Chiefs playmaker, Doctor Khumalo, was shot and wounded when gunmen opened fire on guests at a Soweto wedding in Orlando West on Sunday, his club confirmed.

Kaizer Chiefs spokesman Putco Mafani confirmed on Monday that Khumalo and former Bafana Bafana team doctor, Dr Victor Ramathesele, were hit by stray bullets at a wedding of a friend in Orlando West.

Khumalo was shot in the thigh, while Ramathesele was shot in the leg. They were both treated at hospital and later discharged.

Mafani said it appeared the gunmen were aiming at a man sitting at a table across Khumalo and Ramathesele.

Police representative Superintendent Richard Luvhengo confirmed a shooting incident in the area but could not say whether Khumalo was a victim.

”When police arrived most of the people had left the scene. They only heard of a certain ‘Rhoo’ who had been taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.

”The man was in a serious condition and police could not question him. Police were not told of Doctor Khumalo as being one of the victims,” Luvhengo said.

The man died at the hospital on Monday morning and police have opened a murder investigation, he said. – Sapa
