I refer to the article about land redistribution (“Rural revolt threat”, February 15). Like it or not, land redistribution favours big business and big business generates foreign income and therefore jobs.
Brazilian studies, compounded by recent Zimbabwean land invasions, clearly indicate that idealistic policies do not and will not deliver. Urban drift continues at an alarming rate.
Subsistence farmers care for themselves. Few turn into commercial farmers. Success stories are few.
Leave commercial farmers to be exactly that: they take risks. They carry the risk. That is why they are commercial farmers. Subsistence farmers and/or war veteran land invaders are not commercial farmers but opportunists. They make people hungry. JP Boulle, Durban
