Western Province have released fullback Donovan van Vuuren from his contract to join Welsh club Cardiff.
According to a WP press statement, the club made an official approach and there had been an element of urgency as final registration of players for the Heineken Cup is required shortly.
A Cardiff representative of watched Van Vuuren in the Currie Cup match against the Griffons on July 27, where the player was used at centre. The club then officially requested a release and transfer.
After successful negotiations, WP agreed to release Van Vuuren from his contract, which runs until the end of October 2002.
”Donavan leaves for Cardiff on Wednesday with our best wishes,” said WP coach Gert Smal.
”He is a versatile and exciting player with much to offer.” Rob Wagner, managing director of WP Rugby, added” ”What is WP Rugby’s loss is Cardiff’s gain. This is a very exciting opportunity for Donavan and I am sure his association with the Cardiff Football Club will be a happy and successful one.”
Van Vuuren, who had for the last few seasons played in the shadow of Percy Montgomery and might have found himself further marginalised by the emergence of Werner Greeff as an international fullback, said he was sad to leave.
”WP is in my blood and always will be. While I am sad to leave what I will always consider my home province, new and exciting opportunities and challenges await and I will grab these with both hands,” said Van Vuuren.
Van Vuuren had played 25 games for WP and scored 45 points. – Sapa
