Marais, Malatsi face disciplinary hearing

Former deputy minister David Malatsi and controversial Western Cape politician Peter Marais are to appear before a New National Party disciplinary hearing on Wednesday.

The hearing follows a furore over donations to the NNP totalling R400 000 by the developer of the multi-million Roodefontein golf estate in Plettenberg Bay.

The developer is Count Riccardo Agusta, whose company Count Agusta Golf and Equestrian Estate (Pty) Ltd, was until late last year solely owned by the eldest son of alleged Mafia boss Vito Palazzolo.

Malatsi, who quit as deputy social development minister at the end of last month, has been asked to explain why he ”broke confidentiality” by saying that party leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk knew about one of the donations.

Marais has also claimed that Van Schalkwyk knew.

Van Schalkwyk has claimed that some of the money went into the personal account of Malatsi, who at the time was the Western Cape MEC for environmental affairs and development planning.

The hearing, which is closed to the media, will be held in the Marks Building in the parliamentary complex. Malatsi said on Tuesday he would not ask for a postponement.

”I want it to go ahead,” he said. ”I’m confident, unless people have already made up their minds about the verdict.”

The hearing has been convened by NNP MP Piet Mathee, who will head a panel of five other MPs.

Officers of the Scorpions unit earlier this month raided the homes of Marais and Malatsi, and the Public Protector has launched a probe into the Roodefontein development.

Both Malatsi and Marais, who have been suspended from the NNP pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing, have denied any wrongdoing. – Sapa
