DaimlerChrysler approves packages for 170 workers

Carmaker DaimlerChrysler South Africa (DCSA) has approved a voluntary retirement package deal for 170 of its 3 800 employees, the company said on Thursday.

The company first announced the offer — aimed mainly at employees at its manufacturing plant in East London — in October last year.

DCSA management board member for human resources Johann Evertse said the aim of the programme was to allow employees who wanted to retire early, for health reasons or because they wanted to explore other employment opportunities, an easy way to leave the company.

”Employees were invited to apply for the early retirement, and the applications received were approved subject to operational requirements, such as critical skills, etcetera, ”he said.

He said that while no real targets were set, the company had some idea what percentage of employees might be interested in making use of the opportunity.

The deal received the blessings of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa. – Sapa
