ICC primed for Zimbabwe-England hearing

The ICC Technical Committee were primed for a marathon hearing in Johannesburg regarding the England and Wales Cricket Board’s request to reschedule its game against Zimbabwe on Friday.

The committee will also consider the Zimbabwe Cricket Union’s (ZCU’s) referral of the incident in which Andy Flower and Henry Olonga wore black armbands as a mark of protest against the death of democracy in their opening World Cup match against Namibia in Harare on Monday.

”The Technical Committee will get together at 2pm and the meeting is expected to be lengthy and detailed, with no decision expected before 8pm,” said World Cup media manager Rodney Hartman on Friday.

”If no decision is reached today, an announcement is expected to be made on Saturday morning.”

The meeting will take place in Johannesburg, and will involve all six members of the ICC Technical Committee, as well as Tim Lamb and legal advisors from the ECB and Peter Chingoka and legal counsel, on behalf of the ZCU.

The ICC Technical Committee consists of ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed, chairman Ali Bacher, who is also executive director of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, IDI commercial manager Campbell Jamieson, Brian Basson of the United Cricket Board of SA, Sunil Gavaskar, an independent member and Michael Holding, also an independent member. – Sapa
