Mbeki: Mugabe has said he would step down before

South African president Thabo Mbeki said on Sunday that Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe had in the past said he was willing to step down.

Reacting in Pretoria to newspaper reports that Mugabe had indicated his willingness to step down as president of his country, Mbeki said his Zimbabwean counterpart had said that before, in his presence.

Mbeki said he was sure that Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party had been engaged in the process of renewing its leadership.

”We want to wait for them to finish that process before we can take matters up,” Mbeki said. – Sapa
