SA engineer in court for illegal weapons aid

A South African engineer who has appeared in the Alberton Magistrate’s Court acknowledged that he received around R5,6-million from the Pakistani government to which he supplied weapons plans, Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.

Warren Lloyd Grobbelaar (37) appeared in the court on Wednesday. He is charged with stealing weapons plans from one of South Africa’s biggest warhead manufacturers and then resigning and making electrical equipment for Pakistan.

He testified that he earned around R5.6-million from the contract he had with the Pakistani government, and approached that government because it was the one which spent the most on weapons. He made an appeal for bail on Wednesday.

Grobbelaar was an electronic engineer for Fuchs Electronics for 12 years. He said he and his wife left South Africa to begin a family as they believed South Africa was too dangerous for children. They have no children.

Grobbelaar said he approached the Pakistani Embassy in London and made representations to their military attache. He was then invited to visit Pakistan to present his submission to POF, a weapons manufacturer.

He said POF did not employ him, but did present his submissions to another firm, AERO. He had a contract with AERO, a firm owned by the Pakistani government.

Grobbelaar’s assets have been frozen by the assets forfeiture unit. – Sapa
