South African steel group Iscor said on Tuesday that production was running normally at all its steel plants despite strike action by a small number of National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) members.
Numsa members constitute slightly more than 3 000 of Iscor’s more than 13 000 employees and it would appear that many of the Numsa members have not heeded the call to strike, Iscor said in a statement.
About 400 Numsa members of the 6 000 employees at Iscor’s Vanderbiljpark plant had downed tools and this had not affected normal production at Iscor’s largest steel plant, Iscor executive Abe Thebyane said.
Some 300 Numsa members out of 3 000 employees at the company’s Newcastle steel plant handed over a memorandum to management and subsequently dispersed, Thebyane added.
The company’s Saldanaha steel plant in the Western Cape is running normally.
“It is unfortunate that Numsa has not accepted Iscor’s revised offer in respect of the ex-gratia payment and this offer will now be withdrawn,” said Thebyane. – I-Net Bridge
