The hearing of an appeal against a finding by the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) that the slogan ”kill the Boer, kill the farmer” does not constitute hate speech, will take place on Friday, the SAHRC said on Wednesday.
A panel comprising two law lecturers, Henk Botha of the University of Pretoria and Karthy Govender of the University of Natal, as well as Solly Manamela, an advocate of the Pretoria Bar, would preside over the hearing, the commission said in a statement.
The Freedom Front (FF) lodged a complaint with the SAHRC after African National Congress members used the slogan during two public meetings in June last year. One of these was the funeral of former deputy minister Peter Mokaba.
The commission’s legal department subsequently found that the slogan constituted criticism of another race, and not hate speech. The FF appealed against this finding.
The party, as well as the Freedom of Expression Institute and the legal department of the SAHRC, would present arguments during Friday’s hearing, the statement said. – Sapa
