Two South African singers are this year’s recipients of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation’s annual Reconciliation Award.
Sibongile Khumalo and PJ Powers will receive their awards at a special public function in Cape Town on Friday night for their contribution to ”singing people together”.
Charles Villa-Vicencio said the institute was honoured to celebrate South Africans who ”cross boundaries as if it is the most natural thing in the world to do”.
”Khumalo and Powers are crossing boundaries as if they simply have wings; their wings being their wonderful voices,” said Villa-Vicencio, the institute’s director.
”Both winners have made their unique completeness their strength, confronting their audiences with their prejudices and confinements.”
Recipients of past awards were radio host Tim Modise and comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys.
This year’s award ceremony will be held at the Centre for the Book in Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town. – Sapa
