Bagpipes screech for Madiba

An intersection near former president Nelson Mandela’s home in Houghton, Johannesburg, was blocked on Friday — not barricaded by the police or the military, but by students from the University of Pretoria’s radio station, Tuks fm.

A university law student and DJ Tim Zunkel played happy birthday on bag pipes, while fellow DJs sang ”Happy Birthday Madiba.”

The group said they had come to honour Mandela on his 85th birthday.

Student Marius van der Walt said: ”We came to say hello and happy birthday to a great man.”

Sias du Plessis said: ”We have the utmost respect for him and hope he has a great 85th birthday.”

Anele Mdoda said: ”Come join our party.”

Nearby stood 11-year-old Houghton resident Dovi Olwyn.

On his own initiative he cycled to Mandela’s house because Mandela was ”a great man”.

”I hope there would be more people like him.” – Sapa
