Injury forces Dent to quit against Agassi

World number one Andre Agassi of the United States moved into the US Open quarterfinals when countryman Taylor Dent quit because of a right hamstring injury with Agassi leading 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5.

All other matches were postponed or suspended on Tuesday, the second straight day of rain at the year’s final Grand Slam event.

”To see him injured is outright disappointing for everybody … That’s not way you want it to end,” two-time US Open champion Agassi said. ”It started to become apparent he was struggling with the leg. I was surprised he was unable to continue.”

Top-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium and number five Amelie Mauresmo of France were sent home at 5pm, when their quarterfinal was postponed.

Other singles matches pushed back until Wednesday: number three Lindsay Davenport of the US against number 24 Paola Suarez of Argentina, number two Roger Federer of Switzerland against number 13 David Nalbandian of Argentina, and number seven Carlos Moya of Spain against number 22 Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco. — Sapa-AP
