Opposition praises Ramos

Outgoing National Treasury director general Maria Ramos will be sorely missed when she leaves to become Transnet chief executive, opposition parties said on Thursday.

Public Enterprises Minister Jeff Radebe announced earlier that Ramos would formally join the transport parastatal on November 1, and assume her responsibilities as CEO from January 1 next year.

Democratic Alliance spokesman Pierre Rabie said in a statement Ramos had achieved great successes during her tenure at the National Treasury.

”She will be bringing an immense wealth of skill and expertise to the parastatal; the Treasury’s loss will certainly be Transnet’s gain.

”It is important to replace Ms Ramos with a person of similar calibre and talent,” he said.

The markets had to be reassured that the new director general in the National Treasury was able to face all the challenges associated with the position.

”Any uncertainties in this regard will have a negative impact on our financial markets,” Rabie said.

New National Party spokesman Willem Odendaal urged Finance Minister Trevor Manuel ”to keep intact the momentum of the sound and disciplined management of government finances that was so evident throughout Ramos’ term of service”. — Sapa
