Arsenal reclaim top spot in England

Arsenal reclaimed first place in the English Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Charlton on Sunday while both AC Milan and Juventus posted easy wins to stay tied at the top of the Serie A.

In Spain, Deportivo de La Coruna took over first place, while Bayer Leverkusen moved into the lead in the Bundesliga.

Arsenal got their equaliser from Thierry Henry after Paolo di Canio had converted a penalty to open the scoring for Charlton.

Arsenal (7-3-0) are the only unbeaten team in the league.

Andriy Shevchenko scored twice, increasing his league-leading tally to eight goals, and Jon Dahl Tomasson added a third as Milan topped Sampdoria 3-0.

Juventus got their goals from Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet as the defending champion topped Brescia 2-0.

Next Sunday, Milan host Juventus.

Deportivo substitute Diego Tristan netted a late winner to beat Valencia 2-1. Juan Carlos Valeron also scored as Deportivo won their seventh match in eight chances.

Miguel Angel ”Mista” Ferrer scored for Valencia, who lost their unbeaten record and snapped their six-match winning streak.

Bernd Schneider scored the lone goal for Leverkusen, who beat Moenchengladbach 1-0 to get off to their best start in club history at 8-1-1.

England

Chelsea, who had taken over first place in England on Saturday after beating Manchester City 1-0, dropped to second place after Arsenal’s draw.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored the first-half winner for the Blues.

Manchester United could have jumped into the lead, but the defending champion lost to visiting Fulham 3-1. It was the first home loss for Man United in 13 months and Fulham’s first victory over the Red Devils in 39 years.

Diego Forlan scored for Man United, but Lee Clark, Steed Malbranque and Junichi Inamoto netted for Fulham.

Arsenal lead the league with 24 points, followed by Chelsea with 23 and United with 22.

Italy

AS Roma, who held struggling Inter Milan to a 0-0 draw, are in third place in the Serie A. Inter’s Alberto Zaccheroni was making his debut as coach following Hector Cuper’s firing last week.

Parma, who beat Modena 3-0, are next, followed by Lazio.

Juventus and Milan lead with 19 points each. Roma trail 15 points, one more than Parma and two more than Lazio.

Spain

Defending Spanish champion Real Madrid moved into second place after beating Racing de Santander 3-1 while Valencia dropped to third after their loss to Deportivo.

Raul Gonzalez netted two late goals as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Racing de Santander 3-1.

The Spanish champions, who lacked injured David Beckham, got two goals from Raul Gonzalez and another from Zinedine Zidane.

Yossi Benayoun scored for Santander.

Deportivo are in first place with 21 points, followed by Madrid and Valencia with 19 each. FC Barcelona, who are in seventh place, won for the first time in five matches, beating Mallorca 3-1.

Germany

VfB Stuttgart are second in the Bundesliga after beating VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 on a late goal from Ionannis Amanatidis.

Werder Bremen, who beat SC Freiburg 4-2, are third in the league, just ahead of Bayern Munich.

Bayern got two goals each from Roy Makaay and Sebastian Deisler to beat Kaiserslautern 4-1.

Leverkusen lead with 25 points, one more than Stuttgart with 24. Werder Bremen are next with 22 points, followed by Bayern with 21.

The Netherlands

Ten-man Ajax twice bounced back from a goal down to force a 2-2 draw at PSV Eindhoven, putting Ajax in first place on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and set up another for Ajax teammate Wesley Sonck. Mark van Bommel and John de Jong scored for PSV.

Ajax, who have not beaten PSV in the league in 17 matches, have 22 points, the same as AZ Alkmaar, who crushed FC Zwolle 4-0. PSV are third with 20 points, three more than Feyenoord.

Scotland

Henrik Larsson scored three goals as Celtic beat Aberdeen 4-0 and took a five-point lead over archrival Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. Chris Sutton added a first-half penalty for Celtic’s other goal.

Defending champion Rangers drew 0-0 with Livingston.

Celtic are in first place with 28 points while Rangers has 23.

Greece

Olympiakos stayed in first place in the Greek league by downing rival AEK Athens 1-0 in a game that sparked violence before and during the match. Ieroklis Stoltidis scored the lone goal.

Panathinaikos remained in second place after beating Panionios 3-0. Dimitris Papadopoulos scored two and Silvio Maric added the third.

Defending champion Olympiakos lead the league with 21 points while Panathinaikos have 19. PAOK Thessaloniki are next with 17 points.

France

Monaco remained in first place in France despite a 1-1 draw with Sochaux, while Marseille trail only on goals scored after downing Rennes 2-0.

Fernando Morientes scored for Monaco while Daniel Van Buyten and Didier Drogba struck for Marseille, who snapped a two-match losing streak.

Monaco and Marseille each have 24 points, and both have a plus-10 goal difference, but Monaco lead with 20 goals scored to 19 for Marseille. Defending champion Lyon, who nipped Nantes 1-0, are third with 21 points.

Portugal

Sporting came back to beat Alverca 2-1 on goals from Fabio Rochemback and Leidson.

Defending champion FC Porto face crosstown rival Boavista on Monday while Benfica, which opened their new Stadium of Light on Saturday, beat Uruguayan side Nacional 2-1 in an international friendly.

Porto lead with 22 points, followed by Sporting with 18.

Maritimo, who have a game in hand, and Braga have 17 points each. — Sapa
