Giggs and Ronaldo escape bans

Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo both escaped suspensions but were each fined and given warnings regarding their future conduct by the Football Association in London on Monday.

After a five-hour hearing at a Heathrow hotel, Giggs received a pound;7 500 penalty and Portuguese youngster Ronaldo was fined £4 000 for their part in the fracas that followed Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford on September 21.

Both players were found guilty of improper conduct, but the fines were low compared to the combined nine-match bans handed down to Arsenal players Lauren, Martin Keown and Ray Parlour, and the record £175 000 fine imposed on the London club as a result of the melée.

Giggs is facing a Uefa inquiry on Thursday into alleged use of an elbow during Wales’ Euro 2004 play-off against Russia in Moscow on November 15. — Sapa-AFP
