to the top of the Castle Premiership soccer log, one point ahead of Kaizer Chiefs, when they easily beat Jomo Cosmos 2-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
Both goals were scored in the first half.
In the 10th minute Cosmos had a corner from the right and the ball went to Andrew Rabutla, who kicked high over the bar from a good position.
Play was confined to the midfield as both teams tried to break the deadlock of the defenders.
Santos took the lead in the 20th minute when Jonathan Solomons put over a good cross from the left and Kenyan Musa Ongao headed home.
The Cosmos defenders seemed to fear Jean-Marc Ithier and as a result, left Ongao unmarked
The home side doubled their score on the half hour when Edries Burton put over a cross and Ithier beat a defender before stabbing the ball home.
In the 35th minute Marawaan Bantam moved smartly down the left, centred and Ithier allowed the ball to roll on to Fees Moloi who missed a sitter.
Close to the interval Cosmos forward Teboho Mokoena made ground down the right and cut in, but his ground shot was well saved by Brenden Wardle. Two minutes later Mokoena had a one-two with Manuel Bucuane and the former’s powerful shot grazed the crossbar.
Clever build-up in the 55th minute saw Solomon’s half volley just go past the far upright.
The second half was poor soccer from both sides with aimless passing and kicking. — Sapa
