Corne Krige retires from world rugby

Corne Krige, Springbok World Cup captain and current Stormers captain, announced on Tuesday that he will be retiring from international rugby.

Krige is currently under contract to the Investec Stormers and Western Province (WP) for 2004.

”I have made the decision to retire from international rugby. I have given this a lot of thought and have discussed things through with my wife and family and believe this is the right decision for me,” said Krige.

”I just feel that I am at a stage in my life where I would like to concentrate on the Stormers and WP and would like to spend more time at home with my family. I am still enjoying my rugby and remain totally committed and focused on giving my all to the Stormers and WP this season.

”I have thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Springboks and it has been a dream come true to play in the green and gold and to have captained the team was an incredible experience. I have been privileged to play at that level with some world greats and I want to thank them for making my job as captain a memorable one.”

”I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those at SA Rugby who have been involved in my career and who have supported me — especially the fans. I appeal to all involved at SA Rugby to realise the potential and value of the players we have in this country.

”I truly believe we have a squad that can be world-beaters if utilised correctly. I look forward to the Super 12 and Currie Cup season with the Stormers and Western Province and wish the Springboks all the best for the year ahead.”

Krige debuted for the Springboks in June 1999 against Italy and has played 39 tests for South Africa. — Sapa
