New York wants Olympic Games

The committee leading New York’s bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics has sent its official reply to a bid questionnaire to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 65-page document, the first written submission due by applicant cities, outlines NYC2012’s central themes, including transportation, venue planning, security, accommodation and the environment.

It also includes letters of support from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki.

”New Yorkers are enthused about the possibility of hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 and we look forward to the next year-and-a-half as we compete against some great cities,” NYC2012 founder Daniel Doctoroff said on Tuesday.

New York City is competing against Havana; Istanbul, Turkey; Leipzig, Germany; London; Madrid; Moscow; Paris; and Rio de Janeiro for the right to host the 2012 games. New York is representing the United States after beating out San Francisco in a vote by the US Olympic Committee’s board of directors last November.

Responses to the IOC questionnaire are due on Thursday.
