Gito Baloi shot and killed

Gito Baloi, celebrated South African bass guitarist and member of Tananas, was shot and killed on the streets of Johannesburg early on Sunday morning, police said.

He was shot in the neck, but managed to walk a little way from his car before he collapsed, according to witnesses.

Superintendent Chris Wilken said Baloi was driving back from a gig in Pretoria to his home in Kensington when the incident occurred.

Apparently, when he stopped in Nugget Street in central Johannesburg he was approached by two men, who fired three shots at him in the car. Baloi drove his car about 50 metres, then got out, and walked about 10 metres before he collapsed.

The motive of the attack appeared to be robbery said Wilken, but the 39-year-old musician’s car, with all his musical equipment was left at the scene.

Since splitting from the group Tananas in 1994, Baloi has released several solo albums, and has started his own band: The Gito Baloi Band, according to his website. – Sapa
