Two miners were killed overnight at AngloGold’s TauTona mine near Carletonville, the company said on Friday.
The mine said they died in a rockburst on level 118, some 3 500 metres underground.
The burst was caused by a ”seismic event of 2,5 magnitude”.
The company added that it had notified the Department of Minerals and Energy and the National Union of Mineworkers of the incident.
”The company is in the process of establishing contact with the families of the deceased employees.”
The incident is only the latest in a string of fatal rockfalls at the mine.
In January three miners died and five were injured after a rockburst at the same depth, caused by seismic activity measuring 2,2 on the Richter scale.
In May last year, one miner died and another three went missing following a rockfall, also more than three kilometres underground. – Sapa
