Students at the University of the Witwatersrand and management were still at loggerheads on Monday afternoon over a demonstration that disrupted classes at the institution earlier in the day.
Protesting students forced classes to be cancelled on Monday after being told that financial aid to some students will be cut by as much as 50% due to the high number of students who qualify.
Wits vice-chancellor Professor Loyisa Nongxa told reporters the institution is not legally bound to pay 100% financial aid to students.
“It seems there is a misunderstanding among the students about a letter on financial assistance that was sent to them late last year,” Nongxa said.
“Students who qualify for 100% financial aid were informed that that would depend on availability of funding.
“We told the student representative council the institution has limited funding and if more students apply for financial assistance they will have to share the cake.” — Sapa
