Security at the University of Witwatersrand will be beefed up following protests which disrupted classes on Monday, the institution said on Tuesday.
Vice-chancellor Prof Loyiso Nongxa said all available resources would be used to improve security and the SA Police Service would assist the university when necessary.
Students went on the rampage on Monday forcing classes to be cancelled after they were told that financial aid to some students would be cut by as much as 50% due to the high number of students who qualified.
The university’s management and student representatives have held unsuccessful meetings on the matter.
Nongxa said the withdrawal of the Student Representative Council from talks had obliged management to work individually with students who wanted to discuss constructive ways of seeking additional funding.
A number of initiatives were under consideration and would be implemented as soon as the planning has been completed.
He said the academic programme would continue as scheduled on Wednesday. – Sapa
