Pirates to replay match in Cameroon

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered a replay of the Confederation Cup match between Orlando Pirates and Sable de Batie of Cameroon.

This comes after the referees had declared a walkover in favour of Sable, but a CAF emergency committee on Thursday ordered a replay on August 15.

It will be played at an alternative town in Cameroon.

According to the BBC website, the referees had declared a walkover after Pirates allegedly refused to play in the second leg of their game against Batie in Douala’s Reunification stadium because the pitch was in a poor state for Wednesday’s game.

The match was abandoned on Sunday due to a waterlogged pitch just before restarting the second half. At that time the two sides were still to score a goal.

It was rescheduled for Monday but had to be postponed again to the following day because of the heavy rain in the town of Douala.

Tuesday’s match was also not played due to bad weather. They agreed to play the following day but the pitch was reported to be waterlogged.

After receiving the reports from the match commissioner and referees, the CAF on Thursday ruled that the August 15 match be played at an alternative Cameroonian venue to avoid further problems.

Pirates, who returned to South Africa on Thursday morning from Cameroon, are still enjoying a 4-2 win from the first-leg match played in Orkney three weeks ago.

The overall winners will face Cameroon’s club Cotonsport during the Confederation Cup group stage opener on August 29. — Sapa
