Leopards pip Falcons

The Leopards beat the Falcons by three points (26-23) in an Absa Currie Cup first-division fixture at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons lead all the way right into the dying moments of the game when a try by Leopards replacement centre Barry Geel put the home team into the lead.

The conversion by Corrie Avenant was good and the Leopards won by a three-point margin, good enough for four valuable log points, with the Falcons collecting a bonus point for their efforts.

The first half was a very scrappy affair, filled with mistakes and bad options from both sides, but the last 15 minutes saw the Leopards scoring two outstanding tries to clinch victory.

The best try was scored by flyhalf Avenant, following up when fullback MJ Mentz, who joined the backline in a move deep in Leopards’ own territory, was stopped just before the tryline.

The last try by Geel was the result of tremendous pressure on the Falcons in their own in-goal area. A knock-on gave the Leopards the put-in to a five-yard scrum from which Geel scored. — Sapa
