A husband and wife have been arrested in connection with last week’s bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, which killed nine people and injured 180, Indonesian police said on Thursday.
Rahmatullah, his wife Farida, and another man, Agung Yulianto, were arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of helping to recruit and coordinate the suicide squad thought to have conducted the bombing.
The detainees were found trying to dispose of documents in a well, and three other people reportedly fled before the police arrived, said Commander Endro Wardoyo, a police spokesperson.
”It is believed the house was where Dr Azahari’s new recruits swore their oaths [to commit suicide attacks],” he told local media.
Dr Azahari is Azahari bin Husin, a Reading University-educated Malaysian who allegedly masterminded the attack. Police believe he has now assumed a senior position in Jemaah Islamiyah, the regional terrorist network with links to al-Qaida.
They have offered 1-billion rupiah (£60 500) reward for the arrest of Dr Azahari and his main suspected accomplice, another Malaysian, Noordin Top. – Guardian Unlimited Â
