Memel residents protest service delivery

About 500 residents of Zamani in Memel were blocking the access road to the township in protest over service delivery, eastern Free State police said on Monday morning.

Captain Veronica Ntepe said schoolchildren were among the protesters.

The group were using old car wrecks and dustbins to block the road.

The station commissioner at Memel was at the scene to try to resolve the situation, Ntepe said.

Memel forms part of the Phumelela municipality that also includes Vrede and Warden, which saw similar protests last week.

Hundreds of residents of Ezenzeleni township in Warden protested on Wednesday and Thursday last week against what they termed the lack of service delivery in their municipality. — Sapa
