Man finds a fortune in his mail

A man opened a letter addressed to his home and found more than $60 000 dollars in cash – which he handed over to the authorities, police said on Tuesday.

The unidentified man in the Black Forest town of Wendlingen told police the envelope contained crisp new 500-euro notes all neatly wrapped in newspaper.

There was no indication who sent the letter or who its intended addressee might have been.

”A note said it was intended as a donation for glaucoma research,” a police spokesman said. But the 63-year-old recipient has nothing to do with any such organisation.

”We can only assume the donor could not see well enough to address the letter legibly,” the spokesman said.

Police put the money in safekeeping pending an appeal for the rightful owner to come forward – with proof positive of his or her identity and claim to the money. – Sapa
