The former senior public prosecutor of the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court was convicted of fraud and corruption and sentenced in the Durban Regional Court on Friday.
Stanley Ngubane was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment — three years of which were suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of corruption committed during the period of suspension, said the chief investigating officer of the KwaZulu-Natal Scorpions, Clifford Marion.
Ngubane was paid R70 000 in order for a murder accused to be detained at local police cells, instead of in prison.
”The fraud count also related to when the accused, in his private capacity, used a false identity document to purchase a motor vehicle from a local firm, and also used the same false identity document to obtain finance in order to purchase the motor vehicle,” Marion said.
Ngubane, who resigned last year following numerous allegations of corruption, has begun serving his sentence. He has 14 days in which to tender an appeal in writing to the magistrate. — Sapa
