An egg mixture in a bottle with virtually no fat will go on sale on Thursday in Britain, where a national fat problem of huge proportions has been matched by expanding diet-food sales.
Tesco, the supermarket chain releasing the product, said on Wednesday its bottled eggs are not the first ready-made eggs but are revolutionary in skimming out all the fat.
”For the first time ever, egg lovers will be able to enjoy omelettes, scrambled eggs and pancakes galore without worrying about piling on the pounds,” said Mike Seymour, a spokesperson for Tesco, Britain’s biggest supermarket chain.
The Health Living Liquid Eggs contain the equivalent of five medium-sized eggs in a bottle, but have had almost all the yolk removed, leaving less than 1% of the original fat and cholesterol.
Britain has one of the world’s fastest-growing fat problems, with childhood obesity tripling in two decades and three-quarters of adults now overweight or obese.
The government has urged against fast-food and junk-food makers to trim their salt and fat content and slim their portion sizes, launching a public announcement campaign to push the issue.
Tesco claims its liquid product is good for egg-hungry campers on the trail or for the clumsy, since it takes away the risk of breaking the eggs.
Like the fresh variety, the pasteurised bottled product has a use-by date, and the eggs will go rotten after three weeks. — Sapa-AFP
