Kaizer Chiefs’ campaign to defend their Coca-Cola Cup title started on a positive note when they proceeded to the quaterfinals of this lucrative tournament by beating Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 in a last-16 encounter played at Absa Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The score was 1-1 at interval.
Arthur ”10111” Zwane put the visitors in the lead of this entertaining game when he scored in the 14th minute, to the delight of Amakhosi supporters.
But their joy did not last long as Lucky ”Y2K” Sibeko equalised 10 minutes later.
In the second half, Chiefs reclaimed their lead when Collins ”Ntofontofo” Mbesuma converted Zwane’s excellent cross ball in the 48th minute.
Zwane’s great perfomance earned him the man-of-the-match award at the end of the game.
Though Chiefs won this game, coach Ted Dumitru complained about the state of the pitch.
”Both teams struggled to play entertaining football as the grass was a little bit longer for a soccer match,” said Dumitru.
Losing coach Simon Ngomane said: ”It is always very difficult to beat Chiefs as they have extra player — their fans. Nevertheless, my players did all they could but it was not our day.” — Sapa
