Last-minute victory for Eagles

There was high drama at Goodyear Park on Friday night, as the Eagles snatched victory over the Warriors in their Standard Bank Cup match.

Needing six from six off the last over, with one wicket in hand, all seemed lost for the home side when the first ball, bowled by Lyle Meyer, brushed Deon Kruis’s off-stump.

However, the bails stayed put, and Kruis hit the next ball to the boundary. He hit another two off the third ball of the over, to give the Eagles victory by one wicket, with three balls in hand.

In a match that was interrupted by rain on three occasions, the Eagles restricted the Warriors to 174 all out in the 43rd over.

After the third rain delay, the Eagles’ target was adjusted to 171 off 43 overs.

Some outstanding bowling by Nantie Hayward brought the Warriors back into the match, after their disappointing batting display. His first spell of six overs yielded three wickets for 13 runs, and he finished with figures of four for 28.

The top scorer for the Eagles was Morne van Wyk, who made 57. — Sapa
